Steve Whitaker graduated from Tarleton State University in 1982 with a vision of moving to the High Plains of Texas and starting a farming and cattle operation.  He started with a meager beginning in 1984, and has grown his operation into Whitaker Farms located south of Hart, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle.  In 1986, he married LaNell Chumney, class of 1985, Texas A&M University.  Working together, sharing the same vision, and growing their operation are Steve and LaNell’s life-long goals.

In 1990, their life was forever changed with the addition of twin boys, Whit and Will.  Another addition was made in 1993, when Mikala was born.  The children are a vital part of the farming and cattle operations and are learning responsibility and trust-worthiness. 

Steve and LaNell continued to grow their farming and cattle interests as the children grew and reached “stock showing” age.   Having grown up showing livestock, Steve and LaNell were excited that their children expressed an interest in continuing this tradition.  As the children got older, the family realized that they wanted to expand into a pure-bred cattle business.  Steve’s dad and granddad always ran Hereford cattle, and LaNell had shown some Hereford steers.  More importantly, when it was time to buy show steers, Whit, Will, and Mikala always wanted to show a Hereford steer.  After researching the various breeds, it was a unanimous decision to go into the Hereford cattle business.

After searching long and hard, we believe that we have put together some of the top genetics within the Hereford breed.  We look forward to assisting you in your search for the perfect Hereford, whether it is a scramble heifer, a new herd sire, show steer, or a whole herd of cows.
